Meet Totoro, Grogu. The renowned animation studio Studio Ghibli, best known for works like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, announced this evening that it will be producing a new Star Wars film titled Discover Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies, which is a “hand-drawn animation” and goes by the working title Discover Zen – Grogu and Dust Bunnies. There aren’t many further specifics available, but that’s not a big deal because you can watch it for yourself very soon—on November 12—it will be available to stream on Disney Plus.
The partnership has been hinted at by Studio Ghibli for a few days. Initially with a brief movie that included both the Lucasfilm and the studio’s logos, and afterwards with a photo that showed both The Mandalorian actor Grogu and renowned animator Hayao Miyazaki.
Lucasfilm has already experimented with Japanese animation. Star Wars Visions, an anthology showcasing some of the biggest stars in anime, made its Disney Plus debut in the first season last year. Producer of Visions Kanako Shirasaki told The Verge in 2021, “We wanted to showcase different Japanese studios, not just industry giants.” “We wanted to pick studios that wanted to tell different stories in different ways and had different backgrounds,” the statement continued. A follow-up season is forthcoming.
